2010

On view October 6th – November 2nd 2010
Opening reception First Thursday October 7th (6:30 pm – 8:30 pm)

Evoking at once childhood fantasies and historical sagas, Violet Aveline uses a palette both subtle and vibrant to produce poignant narrative images.  Her newest series, which at times conjures the works of Darger and Tuymans, is on view this October at our Downtown cafe.

A graduate of Indiana’s Herron School of Art and Design, Violet Aveline lives and works in Portland, OR. A fervent advocate of printmaking and independent arts groups, Aveline was a member of the art gallery and studio Ghastly Cave in Indianapolis, IN where she met frequent collaborator Mike Little. The pair moved on to The Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan where they helped install a large format screen-printing studio and assisted artist Elliott Earls. In Portland since 2007, Aveline is the co-founder of Pow Wow Print, an independent art, design, and printing studio.

Through art making, I give myself a reason to explore places that inspire me; forests, train yards, abandoned buildings, and under bridges. Within these places, I search for a visual history, or marks left by others before me.  I’m looking for a story of human existence in the layers of graffiti and decay. There is a history of a violent collision in the scars on steel and concrete. I look to capture the inspiration I feel in these forgotten places. Finding these hidden compositions, and exploring these places, triggers in me a nostalgia for being young and hungry for new experiences. I make art as a record of that feeling, and the places I explore looking for it.
