Closing reception is 4-6pm Sunday, March 24th
Reading by Paul Maziar

“The impetus for this body of work is extremely dark but like most of my paintings I’ve attempted to approach the subject with a lighter hand. The unfortunate situation that led to this work was the murder of a young lady in Pendleton, Oregon. It happened while I stayed in the room below her. It got me thinking about the value of self defense for everyone but most importantly women. A subsequent trip I took to a Seaside, Oregon yard sale yielded a few books on the subject and I went from there. I’ve addressed the victim, attacker as well as self defense champions in these paintings while maintaining the pop feel and color sensibilities that have commanded my work for the last few years.”

- Jeremy Okai Davis

In the work of Jeremy Okai Davis, color use and fidelity to his subjects makes them feel alive, without being too literal. The work feels really light at first glance, but on closer examination of text and posture, the work is full of conflict, an exploration of the contrast between the shiny, smiling exterior that is frequently presented on the surface and the inner, self-conscious, status obsessed mind state that so many of us endure beneath it all.

On view at Belmont January 30th – March 5th, 2013

For my work in graphite and charcoal on paper, I approach drawing as both experiential and objective. The profound way drawing can open an idea – be blown up in scale, redrawn, placed in a computer program and become something else – is the foundation for my art process. My reference points stem from personal photographs and images found in books, magazines and online. Each piece, whether drawing, sculpture, or painting, transcends the polarity between figuration and abstraction, placing micro and macro side by side.
