The Portlandia-perpetuated clichés about Oregon’s most populous city are, in fact, mostly spot-on: Grey skies blanket earnest, crafty, foodie types obsessed with coffee. But perhaps it’s the lack of distracting sun that inspires residents to such industrious creativity. Though the indie scene of Portland is legendary, this artisanal vibe extends to food, drink, clothes, and housewares. And nowhere are they more florid than in the downtown Portland district. Spend a leisurely afternoon shuttling between old-school institutions and the new kids on the block and you’ll leave exquisitely fed, nattily dressed , and above all, highly caffeinated.

The most scenic of this local fave is in the lobby of the Ace Hotel, where you can beautiful-people-watch and get your joe fix. 1026 SW Stark
