In This Ain’t California, skateboarding becomes a metaphor for freedom in Communist Germany. Using Super-8 films, animations, reenactments and archival footage, the film offers a candid peek inside the East Berlin counterculture.
Blancanieves, this year’s Spanish submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, is an imaginative reworking of the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale, “Snow White.” The details of the tale are refreshed–the poor Carmencita is kept from her love, here a bullfighting dwarf, and a happily ever after, her lifelong dream of becoming a matador.
