Portland International Film Festival

We’re proud to be sponsors of the Northwest Film Center’s 36th Portland International Film Festival. The festival opens tonight, runs through February 23rd, and boasts 135 films, including these little gems.

In This Ain’t California, skateboarding becomes a metaphor for freedom in Communist Germany. Using Super-8 films, animations, reenactments and archival footage, the film offers a candid peek inside the East Berlin counterculture.

Blancanieves, this year’s Spanish submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, is an imaginative reworking of the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale, “Snow White.” The details of the tale are refreshed–the poor Carmencita is kept from her love, here a bullfighting dwarf, and a happily ever after, her lifelong dream of becoming a matador.
