Here at Stumptown coffee roasters, we do things a little bit differently. We roast your coffee after you place an order to provide you with the freshest coffee possible. Since all Stumptown Coffee is roasted to order, please allow up to 48 hours after your order is placed for the coffee to roast and ship. We roast coffee 7 days a week; we roast Pre-Order Grand Cru coffees once a week.

We suggest that you only purchase enough coffee to last you up to two weeks as we find our coffee is best enjoyed within 14 days from its roast date. If your order is placed before 8am, Sunday through Friday (Pacific Standard Time), your coffee will be roasted, packed, and shipped within 48 hours. Orders placed any time between 8am Friday and 8am Sunday will ship the following business day.

Please note that USPS and FedEx do not include Saturdays, Sundays or Holidays in their delivery time schedule, so please choose your shipping options accordingly.

USPS Priority Mail estimates their package arrival 2-5 business days after the item is shipped, however this is not a guaranteed delivery time. (This estimate applies to all Priority Mail packages, including shipments with the name ‘2 day’ or ‘1 day’ etc.). FedEx has a guaranteed delivery 1-3 days after shipping depending on your selection (Express, 2 Day or Overnight). Once we relinquish our coffee to USPS and FedEx, the arrival time is beyond our control, however we are always happy to assist in tracking your package or, better yet, helping select a shipping option before your order is placed to get you coffee as soon as possible!

If your order is time sensitive and you want to ensure your coffee arrives by a specific date, please contact us at 503.808.7893 and we will help determine the shipping options available.

Fresh coffee will look dry, rather than oily. As coffee ages, the beans naturally secrete oils, losing some of the flavor nuances in the process. So, you want to be sure that coffee you purchase has a nice, dry surface. Also, darker roasted coffees excrete oils more quickly since the integrity of the bean is compromised by a longer roast which also diminishes the potential flavor nuances. Although a vacuum sealed bag will retain aromatics within the bag, as soon as the bag is opened, those aromatics are released into the atmosphere. A sealed bag does not allow natural degassing to occur in a way that helps maintain the integrity of the bean and the balance of the flavor profile over time. We prefer to strive to provide our customers with the freshest coffee possible and encourage our folks while it’s fresh to have the best drinking experience possible.

We suggest that you drink your coffee within two weeks of the roast (ship) date to ensure you will have the best drinking experience possible. We roast to order daily.

Please store your coffee in an airtight container in a cool dark place (kind of like your spices). Try to be certain that your container does not have any residual acids from anything that was stored in it previously. Please do not store it in the fridge or freezer. Coffee is porous and will absorb the flavors around it. Using a metal container will impart a metallic taste to your beans, so please avoid those.

We suggest that you drink your coffee within two weeks of the roast (ship) date to ensure you will have the best drinking experience possible. We roast to order daily.

When your gift card is successfully added to your account, it will show up as Store Credit (rather than a gift card) which you can redeem on the payment option screen when you check out.

We ship to APO addresses! We have a number of customers scattered around the world with APO/FPO/DPO addresses. You can order online and we’ll ship the coffee directly to you. Please just be sure to use USPS, not FedEx (FedEx won’t work) when you place your order.

We only sell roasted coffee. Sorry!

We can ship coffee internationally. We are not set up to do international shipments online at this time. But, we can process your order over the phone. We ship via FedEx (usually International Priority).

Feel free to contact us with your billing and shipping addresses, as well as your phone number. We can work up a shipping quote once we have your address. Then, we can take your credit card information over the phone.  We accept either Visa or MasterCard. We can be reached at 503.808.7893.

Klean Kanteen uses a food grade paint for all of their bottles which is non-toxic and has a resin-based finish that’s mostly water and is totally free of lead and toxic chemicals.

This paint can be eaten off of and has the lowest impact on the environment of all the paint choices. More durable paint options are available (like powder coat and gloss over coats), however they are not environmentally friendly so Klean Kanteen does not use them.

In general, many folks are happy to hear they are environmentally conscious (like us!) and can live with the scratching. Klean Kanteen has a warranty which says that if the paint chips off more than the size of a quarter, they will replace the bottle at no charge.

Portland: We have free public tastings at 3pm in the Annex Monday through Saturday.

Seattle: Please check out our 12th Avenue location where we have public cuppings at 3pm daily.

The white flakes that you see in the grounds are actually coffee parchment. After the cherry that surrounds the coffee bean is removed, the bean is still encompassed by a thin, papery shell (similar to a peanut) that is called parchment, or pergamino. The parchment is removed during the dry milling process. However, small amounts of parchment stay in the ‘fold’ of the coffee bean. If you look at a whole coffee bean, you will often see a small light colored stripe on one side. When you grind that bean, that small strip of parchment will look like white flakes.

We do not add any flavors or additives to our coffee beans. Our coffee is just coffee.

The flavors we refer to in the descriptions are what our coffee department here has tasted when drinking coffee from that particular farm or blend. We do our best to describe what we taste to help you pick a coffee that will suit your palate and preferences.

Coffee is gluten free.

We do not have any GMO coffee. Most of our coffee is composed of Heirloom varietals. These are coffees that have been cultivated by a family for generations. When sourcing coffee, we look for both heirloom Arabica coffees and traditional farming practices. To learn more about how we source coffee, please have fun browsing through our source reports.

To learn more about coffee varieties, please check out Varieties in the Education section.

The brew guide refers to a Bodum 34oz (8 cup) press pot. Bodum refers to 8 metric cups in their size designation. It’s confusing. Sorry! As long as you use 1 Tablespoon for every 4 oz (US fluid oz) of water, you’ll be fine.
